Further north lies the popular seaside village of Port Douglas. Hire a car to explore the stunning scenic drive from Cairns, and keep an eye out for the stacked stone structures (ironically known as ‘cairns’) just after Ellis Beach.

Beyond Port Douglas you’ll find Mossman, home to untouched rainforests and the Mossman Gorge, while a short vehicle ferry ride over the Daintree River will take you to Cape Tribulation, and a scene reminiscent of Jurassic Park. 

This remote jungle township is a true off-grid experience, with no mains power supply and little to no mobile service, so if you’re looking for a truly relaxing getaway, this is it! You’ll still find plenty of mod cons (and cocktails) at the local backpacker bar, restaurants and resorts.

Travelling west from Cairns, go chasing waterfalls along the aptly named Waterfall Circuit on your way to the Atherton Tablelands. Immersed in the food bowl of the Far North, you’ll find local cheese, chocolate and coffee tastings, food tours and a striking landscape that enjoys a slightly cooler climate than Cairns.

Just two hours south of Cairns lies Mission Beach, a beautiful beachy township surrounded by tropical islands and ancient rainforest. Here you can swim, snorkel, skydive, or simply soak up the sights from the sand.

The warm weather also lends itself to outdoor night-time activities, so you might be lucky enough to catch a full moon yoga class or stand-up paddle boarding under the stars.
